Florida treats most jail and inmate information as public. The catch is figuring out which agency actually has the person you are looking for, because each one runs a separate system. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office maintains the local jail roster, which covers people awaiting trial and those serving short county sentences. The Florida Department of Corrections runs a completely different statewide locator for inmates who have been sentenced to prison. People held by federal authorities or immigration enforcement show up in yet another set of databases that the county does not control.
That split trips up a lot of people. Someone may search the county roster, come up empty, and assume the person was released, when really they were transferred to state custody.
